Senior Football
We fell to our first defeat in the Senior Football championship on Sunday afternoon last when we were comprehensively beaten by Ring in Fraher Field. There was a gale force wind on the day which unusually blew away from the road end and into the top left hand corner of the field. Ring played with the aid of this breeze in the First half and got off to a strong start scoring a goal and a point without reply. Paul Whyte opened up Kilrossanty’s account with two frees either side of a breakaway score from Ring leaving 3 points between the sides midway through the first period. A quickly taken Kilrossanty free then put Joey Veale in the clear and his clinical finish left the team’s level. It looked as though we had pulled ourselves right back into the game but Ring responded quickly, scoring two points to reopen their deserved lead. We struggled to match the pace of Ring’s direct attacking play and they drew further in front with two more well taken scores before Michael Walsh pointed just before half time to keep Kilrossanty in touching distance, 1-6 to 1-3 the score at the break. On the turnover we hoped that we would make use our wind advantage but as in the first half it was Ring who started the stronger.  The Gaeltacht side were dominant around the middle of the field, winning the majority of the breaks and their fast flowing attack put us to the sword once again as they hit us for 4 points without reply leaving 7 points between the teams and it looked at this stage as if the game was over as a contest. A Paul Whyte point then seemed to kick Kilrossanty into gear as they took control of the next 15 minutes. Alan Quinn lofted over a good score leaving the gap at 5 points before a direct ball into the full forward line again put Joey Veale into space and he scored his third goal in two games to leave us just 2 points down with 8 minutes to play. Ring stemmed the tide with a point of their own before Veale replied with another score for Kilrossanty. In the end time went against us and Ring finished the game the stronger scoring two late points and we were left to rue scoring chances we missed during our period of dominance. Credit to Ring, they were by far the better team on the day and were fully deserving of their 4 point winning margin. The final score was Kilrossanty 2-7 Ring 1-14
